THE DONKEY OF NAZARETH

The performance The Donkey of Nazareth represents a dramaturgic collage of Christmas carol motives and specifically animated Christmas crib. It is performed by one actor and two assisting singers, who together act like three carol singers presenting the story about the birth of Jesus. They however retain a certain distance since the truth about this birth and the human hypocrisy of that time as well as of the present days is presented through the eyes of a donkey.

The visual concept created by Agata Freyer is based upon medieval frescoes by Vincent of Kastav. The performance makes use of marotes - hand puppets on sticks deriving from the court-fool’s sceptre. This is the first professional puppet interpretation of biblical motives after World War II, which for centuries has served as base to European puppetry tradition.

THE MISHMASH BAKERY

Do you know how the baker Mishmash makes his bread? Three decades ago, the famous Slovene writer Svetlana Makarovič wrote a story about a bakery known to the neighbouring villages for its tasty bread. This is a story about the goodness of the humble baker Mishmash who offered bread to the poor and to the children for free; yet it is also a story about the nosy and wicked woman Jedrt who is determined to disclose the secret on how Mishmash manages to make the bread so good; and it is a story about the cat who gets tired of Jedrt taking advantage of him, so he decides to move and stay with the baker Mishmash.

SNOW WHITE

Fairytale heroes in this performance will not be set in the magical surroundings of the enchanted forest, poisoned apples, idyllic nature and supernatural kisses but will be in accordance to their typical characters set in modern society structures. Modern fairy- tale situations, this time set in dark mining town, will with the help of modern accessories firstly point out the ecological crisis and uncontrolled pollution of the environment. Of course evil step mother, magic mirror, roguish elves and the savior are a necessity. The story of Snow White comes to life as live, sarcastic comment on the actual state of the world but maintains all the vital fairytale motives that are the red line of this performance.

JOSA WITH THE MAGIC FIDDLE

Jeromir is a picture of a man: almost as big as a giant and so strong that he can carry trees around the place. Joshua, the son of this charcoal burner, is the opposite - small and weedy. This makes Joshua so sad, that he has to cry, because what else shall he become later other than a charcoal burner? One day the bird gives him a magic violin. When Joshua plays, all who hear the music become big and strong or as small as a flies leg. With his magic instrument Joshua rides on the back of an ant to the end of the world. Along the way he must pass some tests in order to reach the moon. Whenever the moon wanders by, the boy plays and it waxes and wanes. Then Jeromir sees to the sky and knows that it is his son who can make it happen.

If she is the angel we expect, we will let her grow Up with me and when she decides, she will be free to leave and save thehumanity. If she is the demon that will exterminate the human race.I will destroy her using my own methods. I promise you, no one will know about this deal. WHEN SHLEMIEL WENT TO WARSAW

An artful tale about a peculiar man and his dreams. At his homely hearth, Shlemiel ponders about the great wide world, particularly about famed Warsaw - the Big City. One faithful day, he makes up his mind and heads off there. The children indulge in child-like curiosity, are joyous, and there are plentiful; the wise men are noble and possibly a tad to wise; the townsmen are nosy, smug or sympathetic, but most importantly, each has their own explanation for the events and goings-on. Finally, we cannot go past the realization that “the whole world is one big Chełm” and all of us its townsmen, for “the world is the same everywhere.”

PUPPET NOMAD ACADEMY 3 PROJECT

Led by Mini teater, Uubliana, Slovenia

co-organizers: Eesti Riiklik Nukuteater - Estonian State Puppet Theatre, Estonia; Figuren Theater Vlinders&Co, Belgium; Maladype Theatre, Hungary; Otvoreni Univerzitet Subotica, Serbia; Pozori~te I.utaka Mostar, Bosnia and Herzegovina; Teatro Neline, Slovakia; Novo Kazalište Zagreb, Croatia

The “Puppet Nomad Academy 3” project is a continuation of the previous two projects with the same name: “Puppet Nomad Academy”and “Puppet Nomad Academy 2”. This project brings an important new element to the active involvement of the elderly population in the design and creation of performances, participation in workshops, visiting performances… The excellence of the proposed activities is reflected above all in the transfer of new approaches / technologies / good practice which will be passed over to the traditional masters of puppetry art. The latter will use their fresh creative energy to present their skills and their knowledge through performances to a wider public in different countries - so in the period of Project duration as well as later within post-production lasting 3 to 5 years. The duration of the project: May 1st 2012 until April 30th 2014.

The Project’s events represent a unique opportunity for local Slovenian, Croatian, Serbian, Hungarian, Estonian, Slovak, Bosnian, and also Belgium artists, cultural workers, experts in performing and visual arts, yet also for the wider audience, to meet artists from other European and non-European countries in person and to learn about their work and their performances. The result of the project “Puppet Nomad Academy 3” will be the upgraded mobility of cultural products, and authors; links among part ners will be renewed and settled. New ideas emerging within the Project will lead to further projects and to co-operation also with other similar organizations and projects around Europe.

THE NOMADS OF BEAUTY PROJECT

Led by Novo kazalište Zagreb, Croatia

Co-organizers: Eesti Riiklik Nukuteater - Estonian State Puppet Theatre, Estonia; Maladype Theatre, Hungary; Mini Teater, Slovenia; Otvoreni Univerzitet Subotica, Serbia; Teatro Neline, Slovakia.

In Croatian contemporary theatre as well as in most countries of the Central and Eastern Europe, stage design and visual creativity have been seriously neglected as theatrical components. Once there were influential schools of theatre design and strong personalities in the field, but after the change of social system the study of stage design has been relegated to the Faculty of Architecture and School of Design. This marked a break between university education and the contemporary practice which requires a complete artist. In this sense the Zagreb New Theatre is unique in the region. The projects of this theatre bring together exceptional visual artists who have significantly contributed to the conceptual and technical development of stage design. Theatre companies taking part in the Nomads of Beauty Project (New Theatre, Mini Theatre, Maladype Theatre, Subotica Open University (International Children’s Theatre Festival etc.) come from smaller European countries (Croatia, Slovenia, Estonia, Hungary, Belgium, Serbia), where very different practices are in use. The idea is to share the exceptional Croatian experience of the visual artists’ work on theatre design with partners, and thus put into action the idea of a nomadic art school. The name Nomads of Beauty was adopted from the historical avant-gardes of the twentieth century. In it visual artists from Croatia, Slovenia, Netherlands, Serbia and France will create stage design/installation/videos/site specific/light installations. Young artists invited to participate in the creation of the project will work with the leading artist mentors, who will then be required to present the end result in all partner theaters.

The programme and activity of Mini Teater is co-funded by the Ministry of Education, Science, Culture and Sports of the Republic of Slovenia and the Municipality of Ljubljana - MOL.
