About the performance
Hans Christian Anderson’s tale of The Little Match Girl is a beautiful and heartrending story that shines a light on human frailty and the power of the imagination to offer hope.
Performed in the round, an intimate space where the audience will experience a dreamlike, magical world of enchanting puppets, haunting shadows and original music… a warm and tender production with a contemporary twist.
Word of the authors
When we were invited to create The Little Match Girl for Mini teater we wanted to explore the relevance of this story for today.
Andersen's tale of hope, despair and love is set in a fast changing time of industrialisation, yet where inequality and child poverty is endemic and the cities are a magnet for the rural poor - this we can still see in cities around the world today with populations displaced by war and poverty.
In a response to Andersen's redemption through death, we ask can a society save the needy through love and compassion.
Using old technologies, everyday materials and our passion for shadow theatre we share with the audience what we hope to be both a moving and magical transformative tale where the audience too has an active role.
