Performance for children and youth

About the performance

The Fisherman and His Soul is a performance for children an youth which was creyated after the story written by the prominent Irish writer Oscar Wilde. His fairytale world has been staged by the Russian director Vasily Senin, who designed also the costumes and the set. Senins is a director who - in just a few seasons after his diploma at the famous GITIS Academy lead by Pyotr Fomenka in Moscow - conquered the theatre through his fresh style. He directed performances- from Shakespeare to modern playwrights - in the best theatres in russia, Bulgaria and Croatia. He excels in his refined approach to the physical expression of the body. Most of his performances masterfully include choreodrama and visual theatre. At Mini teater - since we are keen of his innovations show in his Russian projects - we offered him to direct a performance for children that will certainly thrill everyone.

Wilde's The Fisherman and His Soul is a fairy paraphrase of his own novel The Portrait of Dorian Gray, but written for quite young souls.

This is a story about very important aspects of human life, such as Temptation, Wisdom, Crime, human Soul, offering colourful characters for these definitions. The most important point of this fairytale - emphasized in the performance – is lain upon the only way to a human Heart which is Love. Yet the issue here is not only about the way to another person but about the way to yourself, to your own heart.

»The man has a soul, this is something awfully real. It can be bought, sold and exchanged. It can be poisoned and saved. All of us have a soul.« (O.Wilde: The Portrait of Dorian Gray)

The Fisherman and His Soul ia a romantic story about love between a fisherman and a mermaid. The fisherman falla in love with her , yet if he wnated to marry her he should renounce to his soul because mermaids have no soul. The performance is interestning also for its excellent cast: Veronika Drolc, Maša Kagao Knez and Jose.

About the author

We all know Oscar Wilde mostly for his nove The Portrait of Dorian Gray and for some of the stagings of his famous comedies and dramas. Opera lovers know him also for the famous Richard Strauss' opera Salome . Yet in all his works we can see the writer as a serious and mocking describer of the higher classes in the English society, or as a stubborn interpreter of some bilical or historical event. Fairytales, however, show us the writer from a special aspect. His creative is imagination is completely relieved having for guidance only his own life emotion and his playfully-thoughtful wit. He creates silent poetic worlds in his fairytales. he can be so gentle and his humour can be so benign; yet with them we can also experience Wilde's typical internal development, which brought him to vorticeous success and finally to a catastrophe. Those who know Wilde is well aware, that his brilliant literary rise started with fairytales, with the series The Happy Prince which actually pointed out his excellent gift for narrative. Mini Teater staged this fairytale in 2003, director Luis Zornoza Boy, actor Robert Waltl.
