WORLD DAY OF PUPPETRY 2008
On Friday, March 21, 2008, all Slovene puppeteers, together with their friends and colleagues from all over the world, will celebrate the 7th World Day of Puppet Theatre and Puppets. To honour this day, many theatres in Slovenia will organise free performances: Mini teater, the Puppet Theatre Ljubljana, the Slovene Youth Theatre, the Puppet Theatre Maribor, the Theatre Glej, KUD France Prešeren and others. The idea to celebrate came from the National Committee of the International Association of Puppeteers UNIMA. It was in 2002 that puppeteers in Slovenia and in the world celebrated this day for the first time. The merits for this celebration in Slovenia go to the general secretary of the national commitee of Unima Slovenia, Robert Waltl. Unima Slovenia is an association of puppeteers and friends of puppets; it makes part of the Unima World Association which was founded in Prague in 1929. This is one of the oldest organizations in theatrical art ever, which in 1948 it became member of the UNESCO organisation. In occasion of the 18th Unima congress in the German town Magdeburg in 2000, a resolution was formed that puppeteers shall celebrate their day, so they decided to name March 21 the World Day of Puppets and Puppetry art.
You are all kindly invited to celebrate with us the World Day of Puppetry in different Slovene puppet theatres. We prepared a special free programme of puppet performances. The Slovene Youth Theatre (in its lower hall) will perform its latest hit The House of Mary Assistant directed by Silvan Omerzu who is also the author of visual design; Mini teater (in its hall on Ljubljana Castle) will present its performance The Wishing Table staged by the well known Czech director Marek Bečka. The performance will be followed by short puppet performances created by students of special and rehabilitation pedagogics under mentorship of Edi Majaron. The Puppet Theatre Ljubljana (on its small stage Kulturnica) will present its puppet perfomance Lalanit, while the Ljubljana Theatre Glej will present the performance The Slippers Kitten performed by the theatre Labirint.
At the Puppet Theatre Maribor, they will celebrate with the opening night of the performance The Dwarf. The Ljubljana cultural centre KUD France Prešeren will present the puppet performance The Sleeping Beauty performed by the theatre Fru Fru. At Lendava Home for Elderly People the puppet theatre Pupilla will perform the puppet performance The Cock's Diamond Coin.
