World Puppet Day 2007

On Wednesday, March 21, 2007, all Slovene puppeteers, together with their friends and coleagues from the entire world, will celebrate the 6th World Day of Puppet Theatre and Puppets. To honour this day, numerous theatres in Slovenia will organise ticket free performances, and among them there are Mini teater, Puppet Theatre Ljubljana, Puppet Theatre Maribor, Theatre Glej, Krice Krace Center and others. The initiator

of this celebration is the National Committee of the International Association of Puppeteers UNIMA. It was in 2002 that puppetees in Slovenia and in the world celebrated this day for the first time. The merits in Slovenia go to the general secretary of the National Commitee at Unima Slovenia, Robert Waltl, who is also the successful director of the theatre Mini teater. Unima Slovenia is an association of puppeteers and friends of puppets; it is part of the world association Unima which was founded in Prague in 1929. This is one of the oldest organizations in theatrical art ever, and in 1948 it became member of the UNESCO organisation. In occasion of the 18th Unima congress in the German town Magdeburg in 2000, a resolution was formed that puppeteers shall celebrate their day, so they decided to name March 21 the World Day of Puppets and Puppetry art.

You are all kindly invited to celebrate with us the World Day of Puppets in Slovene puppet theatres. We prepared a special free programme of puppet performances. In its hall in the Ljubljana Castle MINI TEATER will present the marionette-puppet performance THE ENCHANTED STORKS. The performance was created after The Story of Caliph Stork by Wilhelm Hauff, and it was put on stage by the Bulgarian director Slavčo Malenov. It will be followed by short puppet performances created by students of special and rehabilitation paedagogics under mentorship of Edi Majaron. On its small stage, the Puppet Theatre Ljubljana will present its latest puppet perfomance for children: DOGGISH AFTERNOON created by the director Barbara Bulatović. The Ljubljana Theatre Glej will present the performances GOLDILOCKS AND THE THREE BEARS created by the Puppet Theatre Fru-Fru, and THE WHITE KITTEN performed by the Puppet Theatre Labirint. At the Puppet Theatre Maribor, they will celebrate the 400th reprise of the performance THE CIRCUS IS COMING! created by the Czech director Pavel Polak. At the cultural center Vodnikova domačija in Ljubljana a seminar with the title PUPPET IN UPBRINGING AND EDUCATION  will take place. At Krice Krace Centre for Children in Kranj a photo exhibition will be opened and the puppet performance OPEN UP! will be presented. The LokalPatriot Club in Novo mesto will celebrate with the performance THE BEAN, THE CHARCOAL AND THE STRAW created by the Puppet Association LUTKOMOTIVA.
